Skandagiri trek is one of the prominent treks amongst the five hills of the Chikballapur district. Skandagiri is situated in a village known as Kalavara Halli, therefore it is also called Kalavara Durga. In the footsies of Skandagiri lies one of Karnataka’s age-old and oldest mutts, the Papagni mutt. The trail begins from Papagni Mutt and drives its way to the peak, where lies the vestige of a fort that came into being in the 18th Century. got triumph over the fort which was owned by a local ruler and later has been used as a fortress to fight against the Britishers, but subsequently surrendered in 1791 with the defeat of Tipu Sultan.

The top of the peak provides a panoramic view of the four neighboring hills and it’s a sight to explore. Skandagiri is at a distance of 60 Km from Bengaluru and is well linked to road and railways. Hence, it’s the right time for amateur trekkers and can be completed in 5 hours comfortably.

Trail Guide

The trail starts from Papagni Mutt, in the Kalavara Village. The trek can be split into three sections – the first split is a flat trail walk from Papagni Mutt by the forest check post then need to report before commencing the trek. The second split demands climbing capability which needs to be done gently and sometimes steeply through dirt trails and rocky terrain. The final stretch is an inclined ascent to the summit on muddy and fierce terrain.

Best time to trek 

Skandagiri trek can be done all year round. Moreover, due to the little cover of trees on the trail, we prefer you wear a cap during summers to prevent yourself from strong sun rays. Not wearing a cap or a hat will make you feel frightened quickly since the dehydration level increase which causes extreme heat.

 We recommend you not to trek during the rainy season or heavy rain as the trail becomes slippery which causes loose rocks and mud. This can become a hindrance before your trek.
